March 2008 challenge: “Robot”

RoboFusion - Robofusion Alpha!

Posted by Cthulhu32 on 2008/04/03 22:01

Okay, so the gameplay is not really there, but I got all the physics in, projectiles now correctly respond to enemies, the firepower guy has homing rockets!! and you can go back and forth between in-game and the menu.

Try out the alpha (no gameplay really yet) Download Me

A note on the various types of gameplay: Climber level when you latch onto the vines, use up and down to move up and down. You can go infinitely in either direction, and error out, so just pretend this works :)
For the anti-gravity level, press and hold up and press jump, or vice versa, and you will flip gravity! You can only flip once per landing.
For the running stage, not a whole lot to this one yet.
Firepower stage you can shoot homing rockets! Blow up the robots with ctrl, theres a bug thats making the enemies not actually "go away" so the missiles will target ghosts. I will resolve this soon..

CQ Robot - Productivity, where are you?

Posted by Trobadour on 2008/04/03 21:44

Yesterday was a successful day, not for my pyweek ambitions but for my wife's computer.

After some crashes he yesterday raised the white flag and the bluescreens took over. So armed with nothing more than an installation cd and several tools (up2date antivir&...) i restored peace and a nice clean system was the result of my efforts. By the way, there was no time left for pyweek.

But today was a good day :) I implemented a level editor, painted new tiles and implemented a buttons class and several screens. So there are two days left that i have for sound and new features.

CH1ck3n W1ng - Thursday and first screen shot

Well, after 12 hours of work we've got ... something interesting ... whether we'll have something good by the end is another question. We wanted robots, we wanted kick*ss guns, so robots + guns = robot tanks!

Grey - First screenshot uploaded

I've added terrain now and it looks much better than when it was just two colors, gray and teal. It's not exactly artistic, but it's good enough for me.

The gameplay still needs a lot of work. The only building I have so far is the shield generator shown here. I'm afraid it's going to be a fairly bland RTS as far as building stuff goes. On the other hand, I'm very happy with the navigation system I've got going, and I've got ideas for a cutscene or two that I like.

HoleInTheHeadStudios-1.9 - pygame.mixer >:(

Posted by RB[0] on 2008/04/03 19:44

I'm really disliking this right now.
I remember before the update to pygame 1.8 everything was perfect now though it is static on all our comps :(

At first I thought this was due to our game running at < 30 fps, ~40 with psyco.
But, after only one simple optimization we're getting 150+ fps right now - and the music is worse than ever!

does anyone know the "magic numbers" needed for pygame.mixer.pre_init for each platform?
I got it at least bearable - but not perfect on my winXP - but it isn't any better on linux and not tested on mac yet at all :(

Uggh - and I wanted to do multiplayer today - not spend time fixing stupid bugs! :/ Oh well.

Latitude - Bit's and pieces.

Finally I made myself to write a first diary entry.

The game is progressing, although if not as fast as I'd like it to, I'm way beyond schedule, and I drop out things as time goes by. So far, graphics was the most challenging things to do, way beyond generating levels or coding physics or game logic.

And I'm definetly getting a vacation for the next pyweek, oh yes.
