Obbo's Descent - Day #4

Posted by Moguri on 2020/09/24 05:55

With the sun retiring from the sky some hours ago, it is about time for me to follow suit and retire to my bed. But, before that, let us check in on our favorite asteroid fisher-alien: Obbo.

The last time we checked in on Obbo he was just beginning his fishing lessons. I am happy to report that Obbo is a quick study and has a much better grasp of asteroid fishing.

However, everything was not smooth sailing for poor Obbo today. Earlier today Obbo's magnet was being troublesome and refusing to grab magnets unless the magnet hit the asteroid dead on. A magnet should have some pull, so we checked to see if Obbo's magnet was defective.

Yikes! That small white sphere was the only spot on the magnet with any grabbiness left. Quite a weak magnet! After swapping out the magnet for one working at full strength, the lessons were much more fruitful.

Asteroid fishing can be exhausting work, so Obbo took the occasional break to admire the new scenery.

Not one to sit idly on his accomplishments for the day, Obbo also started learning some carpentry.

Obbo is doing marvelous on the basics and showing much enthusiasm for this new skill. Unfortunately, Obbo may be a bit too enthusiastic:

Impressive work Obbo! However, tomorrow we will have a lesson on restraint and constructing buildings at a scale to better fit the environment.

goatforsaken - We Got Half The Time Left! (Part III)

On the backend of things, patryk-tech had worked out the Websocket authentication, which is "not so simple when your client is not a web browser" (quoting him). He also added ngix and some production details to the back-end.

No, this is Patryk.(according to patryk-tech, these are all internal network addresses and disposable passwords specifically chosen to be shared)

And an authentication view, made by yours truly:

Authentication View(if you are wondering why there is "Confim Password" in the login screen, it was to test the responsiveness of the forms.)

Yes, the authentication view is made to be responsive. As you can imagine, coding the other UI features (with the arcade library) will be a breeze!

Spider Island - The first/fourth day

Posted by karx on 2020/09/24 00:17

I missed the announcement, and the first 3 days of the challenge. Being late to the party, I quickly set up a new project in PyCharm and made a window appear using the Python arcade library. I found some free sprites online and made a simple platformer game, with rubies and spiders that follow the player. This functionality can be seen in the video I have uploaded.

Tomorrow, I will finish up the sprite replacements and create some  walking animations. Once this has been done, I will make more levels for the game.

Pyrates - Wednesday

Today we finally got around to implement time into our game and therefore resources are now being consumed every (ingame) day by
our trusty and definetly not absolutely disposable crew.
Speaking of which today we also added the feature to abandon and replace crewmembers in the blink of an eye.
Apart from all of this we added a pause feature, savegames, a main menu and replaced a lot of the placeholder graphics...
So on the bottom line of things we are advancing faster than we thought and are impressed how far we came considering we have never even tried making a game before!

goatforsaken - We Got Half The Time Left! (Part II)

Our beloved NMarco had been working on the character motion animation, which is essential to a polished game.

Walking Animation Prototype

Our other beloved, Pushfoo, engaged in further discussion on some potential gameplay mechanics, and had put together on a text mock-up of our video game.

An active member of ours, Sachin, alongside with the help of SexyPistol, produced a loading screen, T&S view and the game menu.T&S View(the picture in the background is a placeholder)

goatforsaken - We Got Half The Time Left (Part I)

We got a pretty rough idea of what our game should look like.A Democratic Decision

And that probably isn't a good thing when we got half the time left. One of our leaders, Fisher, had just finished his major exam (congrats!!), and got caught up with what his happening. He put his leadership into good use and had us organized back into place.

It started with extensive wiki writing.

goatforsaken - What Day 1 Looked Like

Posted by m_cht on 2020/09/23 13:00

Due to our time zone differences, we had to start eight hours after the theme was released. Though, that gave each one of us to think about what the game could be. (However I imagine most of us were thinking about how we could shoehorn goats into our game.)

After a fruitful discussion, we had a bunch of different ideas piled up in our meeting minutes. We drew inspiration from a wide variety of different games (whilst being careful as to not plagiarize), and thought about how we could construct a narrative that was consistent with the theme and gameplay mechanic (and goats). Most importantly, we figured out the name of our game: Goatforsaken.

We did it. The goats are in our game; the hard part is over.

Out GitLab repository was set up and the work on our game that we were so excited about had begun.GitLab Work Board

Lonely Timmy - Day 3: Base game fully done

Posted by pluttodk on 2020/09/23 06:07

So as the title says, the base game is now done. Meaning that for day 4 I will mostly focus on adding sprites for the characters and trees.

I had a lot of fun optimizing the game.

Now you can also sleep in the house (with a nice aninimation. Additionally it has started counting days (so there will be some sort of how fast you can get away from the island)
Additionally you can sail from the island once the boat is large enough

I am linking here a imgur link to the video:
