September 2008 challenge: “The length of a piece of string”

just_restin - Home Stretch

Reality has conspired against us! Not too much has gotten done, compared to how much we would have liked to do. Let's hope we at least have a playable game by the end of compo tomorrow.

abg5 - Continue on or restart again?

Posted by eugman on 2008/09/13 02:22

I've spent all day trying to solve a problem. I don't think I can solve it and working around it doesn't look like it'll work well either. So I'm going to go to sleep now but I have a question. What do you think I should do? Try to solve it and finish up or Start over again and make the simplest game I can in the time remaining?

as yet unnamed - near the end

Posted by devguy on 2008/09/13 01:17

majority of the story is done, everything's working fine, art not ideal but is there, sound minimal but again, present. Tomorrow I'll implement whatever I can for the battle system. As a balance to the text, it really should be fleshed out, but time constraints, so yeah. Uploaded a new screenshot with actual npc dialog.

The original plan was to make the battles integral to the gameplay, you'd level by scanning each area for enemies and fighting them, then go after the bosses who'd drop the pieces you need to win. But now, it's set up so you'd get the pieces whether you win or lose. I think a longer Pyweek would be nice. Or forced teams or something.

Gondola - Many thanks to PyWeek and Richard

Posted by joey101 on 2008/09/13 00:09

I just want to express my gratitude for this contest; this past week as been a lot of fun. The "horrible" theme ended up being great because it gave us a completely new and original (to my knowledge) idea.

If it weren't for pyweek Matthew and I wouldn't have made this game and it's been something I've wanted to do for quite some time; A small game that can be done in a week that is actually finishable - and polishable.

So my thanks to Richard for setting this contest up. We've had a great time and I hope everyone else has too!

Roam Unbent, Heartfelt Nightsong - Lots of dataaaaa...!

Posted by j-1 on 2008/09/12 23:43

Two days of actual coding, six days of scripting. Why didn't we use the first three scripting days better?!

Oh, and I hope you don't mind the game being ~40MB in size... I think I can promise you will appreciate it.

Lunar Delivery - I think I'm done

Posted by bencoder on 2008/09/12 23:36

I've labelled it 0.9 because I haven't tested it thoroughly enough yet, but it's pretty much done:

It's a bit lacking in the fun department but it's got some gameplay value. Please let me know if anything doesn't work so I can fix it before the deadline.

P4 - 25 hours to go...

Posted by RB[0] on 2008/09/12 23:04

Well, so now we get to look back on the first part of the week and see what has happened.
Currently Markus and I are running on very little sleep - I have been averaging about 5-6 hours each night now, staying up 'til 5 am this morning - so today started out a little anti-productive, but we have managed to turn that around finally.

Today so far we have some sounds, code and art from Ieuan (Unnheulu), some art and code from Pymike, a lot of code form Markus and myself.

The battle gui is now done, as well as automated resource gathering - though the gui is not yet in place to actually stop this LOL.

SO now, about 6 hours behind schedule I am starting to hit the ai - and Markus is working on finishing up the UI.

After that, we have a few bugs, but then we are pretty much golden and just need some playtesting and balancing.

Woot, we may finish yet! :D

Mr. Fuze - I am DONE!

Posted by pymike on 2008/09/12 22:53

WOOOHOOO! I finished Mr. Fuze today, all polished up and everything! I played through the whole thing after I finished it, and I didn't really run into any bugs. The game features 9 levels of platforming mayhem, and a final boss! The storyline is explained in-game ;-) So, give it play! It's easily one of my best games ever! Or, if you're a bit busy, just take a gander at the screenie of the last level below ;-)

Cthulhu32's Pyweek 7 - Kinda good, kinda bad outlook for my game

Posted by Cthulhu32 on 2008/09/12 22:42

Alright, so there are a few aspects to my game that are working pretty well and I'm pretty proud of. One of them is the rope connecting stuff, it feels kinda arcadey, but very cool at the same time. And shooting a million pieces of rope is great fun! I'm actually rethinking my game mechanics a little bit to make it so you can always shoot an infinite supply of rope. But maybe if you hit a monster they go buck wild and come after you or something.

Now the bad news: its Friday, its 4:30pm, I still don't have gameplay working. I'm still shakey on the actual core gameplay. Usually I cut my games pretty tight, but I think I've reached a point of no return. I am going to attempt to get gameplay working tonight and tomorrow, but realistically this is going to be a cute demo. I'm also debating just making this a funny little run & gun game, who knows.
