Abstractions

Hmm "the length of a piece of string".... now what can I do with this one. I'm drawing a total blank, but I can see potential for either String Theory, rope physics, some type of string monster, I have no clue. Maybe I'll start sketching and come up with something.

Finally, an idea!

Here we go, just put together some sprites and background picture for an idea for my game. So I was thinking "strings", why not have a main character have to put together strings to reach somewhere. So how bout some scientists, bad guys, robot main character, Knytt like graphics, and some rope physics. Probably too much for me, but we shall see.

Very quick intro

Just worked on the game a bit, I mostly got the menu, pause, etc. working. I also got a very prelim amount of work on the main robot character. Controls are A and D, and space is jump. And use the mouse to point the arm.

Collision Level Builder

So I made a small little tool (really not user friendly, but I have a system :D ) and I thought I'd post my dev work station. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, DrPython IDE (along with text editor for small stuff), and a few other things.

Not as much progress as I would have hoped

Alright, so my wife accidentally spilled a good half glass full of juice into the bottom of her laptop last night, so I spent much of today opening and cleaning her laptop. There are about 30 screws total in that thing, so it took me forever to get it apart and together. AND then I forgot to grab milk at the grocery store, so its 11:20 pm, and I have done about 20 minutes of work tonight. Things are not looking too up for me for this Pyweek unfortunately. I have no idea if I'm going to have time to finish this thing or not, hopefully I'll get collisions working tonight and that will speed me up A LOT.

Seems like everyone else is having a pretty hard time with the theme as well, but I have high hopes there are going to be some cool entries.

Kinda good, kinda bad outlook for my game

Alright, so there are a few aspects to my game that are working pretty well and I'm pretty proud of. One of them is the rope connecting stuff, it feels kinda arcadey, but very cool at the same time. And shooting a million pieces of rope is great fun! I'm actually rethinking my game mechanics a little bit to make it so you can always shoot an infinite supply of rope. But maybe if you hit a monster they go buck wild and come after you or something.

Now the bad news: its Friday, its 4:30pm, I still don't have gameplay working. I'm still shakey on the actual core gameplay. Usually I cut my games pretty tight, but I think I've reached a point of no return. I am going to attempt to get gameplay working tonight and tomorrow, but realistically this is going to be a cute demo. I'm also debating just making this a funny little run & gun game, who knows.

Officially throwing in the towel

Hey everyone, so I've reached a point in my game where it has too many bugs to fix, too little content to make it interesting, and I had a good time getting it to where it is currently :) I'll be upping a demo shortly, check out SaveScience 0.005.

It was fun to chat with all the #pyweek irc guys, good to see the community is going strong! Thanks again everyone for giving comments and checking my work out so far.
