August 2015 challenge: “Data data data”

Market Master - Phew!

Posted by iminurnamez on 2015/08/16 01:12

I was right down to the wire on this one. With less than an hour to go, I discovered that pickling was no longer working. There were a few swears. I wasted the first day working on a horse racing sim that I, perhaps foolishly in retrospect, decided against and I was under the gun ever since. I had originally planned on more options like being able to take over companies buy acquiring a controlling stake, but the graphs took way longer than I figured and the economy took way, way longer. I used different .gov sites, especially the census data, to try and give the economy some basis in reality, but I'm not an economist, accountant or anything of the sort so you get what you get (also, let me just say the amount of data available from .gov sites is staggering). So, with another pyweek complete, it's miller time.

Fragmented ~A Dying Land~ - Quick re-upload

Posted by Jjp137 on 2015/08/16 00:45

Just uploaded a new version to fix some mistakes related to the title of the game. You don't really need to re-download if you already did. Changes:

  • The title was incorrect in README.txt and LICENSE.txt
  • Change the window title

Oh, I forgot to link this in my previous post, but here's the Git repository if you want to look at it: https://bitbucket.org/Jjp137/jjp-pyweek20

Edit: Okay I need to stop adding the save file and .pyc files on accident :\ sorry about that

Edit 2: Fixed a bug with level 3-1; oops :(

Beyond the Horizon - Game complete!

Posted by Cosmologicon on 2015/08/16 00:26

Unlike last time, this time we're actually submitting a complete game, yay! There's a lot I could say about the process, but for now, I'm just asking for bug reports and crashes. Let me know if the game doesn't work for you!

master47pyw20 - Inside The Data Tunnel - All done! Game finished.

Posted by Master47 on 2015/08/16 00:13

Ok, not really. What really annoys me a bit is that I didn't get to include sounds for shooting projectiles, receiving hits, ... Next time I will try to make more time for music and sound.

Rushing Mania - Day 7 - Buzzer Beater

Posted by ApathysBlessing on 2015/08/16 00:07

Our project is now submitted, and I've just written my first game. Its a good feeling, but game's weren't meant to be written in one week. There were so many elements I wanted to incorporate. I think I will feel that way about every game I make. I want to see my games played by the whole world. When times are hard, I want people to find relaxation and peace in my creations. I want to share in that peace along side them. Anyways, about this game: You are a bio-electrical (and very adorable, thanks to Abi) creature that lives inside of a bit-stream. That bit-stream will carry you across the expanses of cyber-space. Along your journey, you'll need to collect byte arrays from the bit-world in order to do more and increase your energy conservation. The less energy you consume getting from point a to point b, the better your score. The CONCEPT for this game to be as much puzzle as platformer, with an endless array of possibilities to lower you energy output, and create the most efficient data-stream to travel. Their are already platforming elements in place that you may not find in many other games. I may continue with this project, or maybe someone else will. Maybe in another form, or in another lifetime. We carry our past challenges with us into new, more ambitious ones that propel us into greater possibilities in the future. Until then :)

Fragmented ~A Dying Land~ - And done!

Posted by Jjp137 on 2015/08/16 00:03

Yep, it's done! :)

For those that want to know what I did the past 24 hours: First of all, I finished making all the levels. I also wrote a story during the last 6 hours or so. I'm not a good storywriter, and it's really rushed, so it's probably not that great but oh well :p I also realized that I didn't implement pausing, so I did that really quickly.

However, I didn't really properly playtest the last group of levels, so I hope there isn't a mistake in the level files that prevent proper completion of the game. Everything before it can be completed, though. I'll probably speedrun the game to make sure that the game can be completed right after I finish this diary entry. There's also a rare collision detection bug in which the player has a sudden "jump" in position on the screen. It's still lurking around and I've only seen it once, so if it happens to you on a hard level, I'm sorry :(

Anyway, it's uploaded now so you can play it, although you should probably finish writing that readme first :) Also, the game actually has a title so I need to change this entry's details...and I should upload up-to-date screenshots. Let me know in the comments if any issues or severe bugs pop up.

After a week of coding we got it done. Its playble. Maybe not tweaked and tuned as it should be. But see yourself. It will be uploaded within the next 24 hours.

Bitstream Manipulators - The End is Near

Posted by JFrog on 2015/08/15 23:11

So, less than one hour before this ends, my game works pretty well with no visible bugs (although it is fairly difficult to beat the last few levels), and I just got home from a campout, so I haven't worked on it for slightly over 24 hours. This most recent submission contains updated from the hour between my last entry and when I left, and didn't really have much change. Hopefully I don't have anything left to finish, which I don't think I do. Thanks for letting me make this game!

Data Wipe - Uploading at long last

Posted by Quikli on 2015/08/15 22:54

Just under the wire, but I finally got the last touches done on the game. Nothing like procrastination to make a project interesting. It ended up playing a little like flappy bird, but easier. I'm not sure if that's a bad thing for a simple 1-week 2d game.

Fragmented Space - White or not?

Posted by cyhawk on 2015/08/15 22:22

As a last minute addition I put a background image under the game area. Can you see it in the screenshot?

On Alex's machine he says it appears completely white. So white that GIMP says every pixel is white. It was great fun convincing him otherwise...

There's nothing else new on the screenshot compared to Wednesday. It's such a shame, but a lot of time went toward making things work, adding sounds, cutscenes, a level progression, scoring, a tutorial, etc. I can't make a screenshot of those.

It quite a complete game actually. We may re-record the narration tomorrow, because I mumble terribly. I can't understand a word of what I'm saying. And fix any bugs we find! (Something's wrong with the icon on Windows I think.)
