August 2010 challenge: “Caught”

Most Wanted Hipsters - Sick and Regrets

Posted by dummey on 2010/08/27 06:18

Staying up all night has finally gotten me sick =(. What's worse is that I stayed up working on a part of the game that probably isn't even go to make it in.

Aside from that the game is getting close to finish. In terms of programming, I could leave everything the way it is and it would be fine. The real question if I can let myself do that. I am really split on whether I will clean up my code or add graphics and sounds. I know that the later is more important for the development of the game, but there is a part of my pride that cringes at how the code is currently laid out. I wonder if any of the other teams have similar feelings towards their games.

As for what I have to still do, I need to make sprites for the hipsters. Some graphics for the buildings and landscape would do wonders. UI elements on the game screen need to be tweaked and colors changed (hard to decide on a color when you are color blind). And finally, the most dreaded part for me, music. If somebody can point me to a good place to nab some music and sounds for my game, I'd greatly appreciate it.

ThEdA_P11 - Submited Final version

Posted by gizmo_thunder on 2010/08/27 05:25

I don't think ill' be able to work on my game anymore. Have a lot of things pending other than pyweek :)
I submited the final version of the game. If i do find some time ill' try to update but this will more or less be bug fixes.

Here is a brief description of the game:

This is a never ending game where the user competes to obtain the achievements. You are trapped on the surface of a bubble. You are able to "slide" from one position on the bubble to the other. Don't let the germs on the bubble catch you. Collect all the "stars" to start a new wave.

How to play:
Move the mouse to set the direction

Click to move in the specified direction.

Catch the Cootie - Important milestone reached: hankie wiping

Posted by richard on 2010/08/27 01:46

Adults now apply the hankie. Yes.

In other news I've been tweaking the navmesh solver code so it's a lot nicer. I'm looking at path optimisation ideas, but I really should focus on getting more gameplay done.

Suspended Sentence - Atack of the Lurgi

Posted by drnlm on 2010/08/26 22:48

The Lurgi continued to march through our ranks, laying low two further members of the team [1]. Despite this, we valiantly struggled on, and it looks like we may have a playable game by the end of the week.

The day saw comparatively little fundamental work on the game engine, which is looking surprisingly solid for only a few days work. Engine work done during the day included:
  • Improvements to the scene layout helper app
  • Adding support for multiple results from interactions
  • Transparent message dalogs
Much work was done on tightening up the plot and defining the puzzles still needed, and lots of content was added. Other than the final puzzle, all the planning work is done. A number of puzzles went from the plotted to basically implemented, and a bunch of general flavour text got added.

Some rooms acquired artwork, although we still need to colour most of it, and several of the placeholders got replaced.

On the TODO list, the remaining important items are finishing the art, writing the conclusion and recovering from the Lurgi.

[1] The lack of competition for time from work is more than offset by the lack of general productivity due to the Lurgi. Why can't we catch nice illnesses that are just enough to keep people home without interfering with their ability to work on pyweek?

ThEdA_P11 - Lot of Work to be done

Posted by gizmo_thunder on 2010/08/26 20:48

I guess there is no point in stating this explicitly.. :) everybody seems to be in a rush to complete their games. Unfortunately i couldn't get a lot of time for this pyweek but im' happy with what iv'e achieved in 2 days. I will be working on my game tomorrow to put in the finishing touches. Here is hoping that ill' be able to complete the tasks before i start with travel plan.
In case you find time please do check out my game.

Davide Rules - Half of work is done

Posted by ilseppia on 2010/08/26 20:32

Ok, logic is pretty done and tested.
But at this very moment the game looks just like lot of Rects going around... so now is time to think about some graphics, menus and eventually sounds...
As anticipation, if anyone is really reading this, my very simple game is a mix between two playground games: "Tag" and "Blind man's bluff" with some variations... don't know how to explain it better.
I'll post a screenshot later.

Flight of the Pink Elephant - Day 5 = day 1

Posted by cyhawk on 2010/08/26 18:06

Catastrophe! We've only realized it's PyWeek already on Tuesday as we went to bed! Yesterday as we recuperated from the panic we threw around some lovely ideas but now they are all in the bin, in favor of Flight of the Pink Elephant!

Now that we have this beautiful concept art all that's left is cutting it into pieces and pasting it on a computer screen! I have already composed a "doom-doom-boom" soundtrack using only three keys of the piano so the audio department is also covered.

Escape from Wherever - Day 5 - Finished game?

Posted by Myran on 2010/08/26 17:58

So I just uploaded my first final submission, I don't really have any plans to update it unless there are any major issues.

Today I added music, an ending, a death screen and a start screen, I also did some more balancing and just minor polish. I'm pretty happy with the result, although the code is a bit of a mess. But I guess that is expected considering the short time limit and the fact that I'm quite new to Python.

I don't expect to be working on the game tomorrow, but I will take a look at packaging, it would be nice to be able to run the game on computers without python and pygame.
