March 2006 challenge: “It runs on steam!”

sjbrown - stressing out

Posted by sjbrown on 2006/04/01 15:47

crap.

I thought I'd have more time. Isn't it always the way? It's the last morning. I've got my coffee and bagel, and roughly 8 hours to go.

Plan:
2 hours: make water wheel spin, and make a "you win" screen
1 hour: make a win32 build and distribute to friends for their feedback.
2 hours: make at least 2 more game modes - it needs more of a "challenge" feel. Right now it's too relaxing.
2 hours: sounds. right now it has none.
1 hour: emergencies

Üterbraten Project - My surrender

Posted by LC0 on 2006/04/01 15:22

Well, since i'm getting some odd troubles making the main character movement, and i wasn't able to make its graphics, i surrender :), that is, i won't submit the final entry of my game prototipe. It's my fault because i didn't take all the time i had, and the stuff mentioned above was being checked today (at the very end of the competition). However that doesn't mean i won't finish what i'm doing. The engine is totally mostly finished, in order to be able to make a complete adventure graphic. The scenery i was making for Pyweek should be ready in less than one day (only adding object respones to the user actions). As future plans, I may try to improve it by using a 3d engine instead of Pygame, and mixing C++ with Python. Good luck for all!

Steam Pipe Dreams - Day Six In Progress

Posted by andrew_j_w on 2006/04/01 14:14

I've had quite a successful morning of programming, the game is now playable as a game and everything apparently works!

Consequently I've uploaded the current version so if people could download it and try it out that would be marvellous. Get it here. It only requires Python and PyGame.

The biggest missing element is the instructions, which I guess will make playing the game quite hard - but click some buttons and see what happens.

If you manage to crash the game please post the traceback message and say what you did!

Next job - write the instructions, then create a whole pile more levels.

Nik Baer's Solo Entry - ouch time goes quick

Posted by nikolajbaer on 2006/04/01 13:55

Well, only four hours to go, and I am a long way from done. Funny how the week just flew by... oh if only I was a student again! Anyway, I am gonna hack hard and quick for the next four hours to make it moderately playable, I hope, and submit anyway.

Remnants of the First Universe - Last day, first post...

Posted by Tee on 2006/04/01 12:52

I didn't post anything until now, though I was reading all posts. :)

I probably won't be able to finish this, just like my last PyWeek. I had only around two (half) days to work on my code and graphics, but I still intend to try finishing it today. I think I have a decent idea and the design is done, though I had some problems implementing the steam (pygame.transform.scale didn't work as I expected), I'm unexperienced in game programming and, by now, I only have half the (programmer's) graphics and physics done, and almost no game rules.

Therefore, it's not very likely I'll finish it, but I'll try anyway. Who knows?

Neowert - Progress

Posted by neowert on 2006/04/01 12:44

I finally had a little time to work on my entry. It has terrible graphics, and when painting landscapes it runs very slow (fortunatly you do not do that all that often). I do not have to to implement dirty rectangle rendering. If I did, it would always run smooth. I may be done by deadline, but I dunno.

Chris Wilson - So. Very. Tired.

Posted by ciw42 on 2006/04/01 08:59

Well, after my second all-nighter this week, the game's starting to look pretty good. It won't be fully finished in time, and I suspect I'll be another couple of days adding all the nice odds and ends that I've come up with today, but it certainly should be playable and hopefully fun too. Just at that point now where I'm wondering if I should just stay up, knowing that I'll be less productive, and may in fact die at the keyboard, or catch a couple of hours sleep and be much fresher but obviously have less time to do things? Trouble is, I took a break from coding the actual gameplay to do some incidental stuff which required very little brain power, and I hoped that would refresh me, but all I've got of that left to do is write the text for a second instructions page which will take all of about 5 minutes, and then it's back to stuff which will require the use of my brain. Sod it. I'm off to bed.
