March 2010 challenge: “Wibbly-wobbly”

Bogey's vendeta - Final release

Posted by StephenJacob on 2010/04/04 00:09

Well that was an interesting challenge .
Also it's quite enlightning to write a project in limited time , tho' would have been better another time I have been very busy this week and couldn't work on it more than 5 hours .
Moreover I uploaded my final submission 5 minutes ago , 10 minutes before the end of the challenge , so couldn't really test it through .

Anyway now it's over so I guess we just have to wait for the results .

Btw some tips about my game :

-I think I uploaded a picture in the rare wich wasn't meant to be there ...Just ignore it x)
-You need to extract the images and the Project.py in the same folder.
-If you keep the blob at x=0 it will avoid every spikes , was originaly a bug but kept it to make testing faster and then didn't have time to remove it .
-If you press left and right at the same time while on the ground it will set up a strange dust animation,
a part I couldn't finish , just jump in the air to cancel it .
-In the last level there is an Item(Big box with an I on it)  wich was actually made to solve puzzles and all but since I didn't have time for this either ...You can still pick it up and drop it with the E key .
-Red boxes are supposed to block you , again no time for their art and they only work one way for some reason ...
-Story was made up in 5 minutes before the end of the contest , seems like there is a bug in the starting slideshow , you can watch it directly from the images Story01 to Story07.

Well I think that's it .

Intestinvaders - Intestinvaders v1.0.1

Posted by Chard on 2010/04/04 00:08

Hi everyone! We've been quietly getting on with our latest invention...

The year is 2391.

Earth is a utopia.

M
ankind's technological achievements have brought about the rise of the most exciting sport ever created: tiny miniature spaceships travel back in time, in order to race through the intestinal tracts of unsuspecting inhabitants of the previous centuries.

The most accomplished and daring racers are selected to participate in the World Championships, a series of races which take place inside the most important colons in history, those belonging to the most powerful men in the world: The Presidents of the United States of America!

Do you have the guts to become an INTESTINVADER?

Intestinvaders is a racing game with online best times and procedural track generation. In addition it includes interesting facts about US presidents. It's been fun, now to play games!

Terraformancer - Terraformancer is final

Posted by Trobadour on 2010/04/04 00:05

It's not exactly what i planned to submit but it's playable and it has wibbly-wobbly terrain :)

In the game you lead a drunk guy to the princess and escort her back into the safe tower. You have
a spell to cast upon this guy, to remind him what to do and you can also raise and
lower the land to create a safe path for him and the princess. But beware,
besides a nasty time limit there are also earthquakes that shake the land!

Select a spell with the mouse and:
- click the guy with the escort spell to tell him to go and get the princess and return her to the tower
- click a terrain column with the raise or lower spell to alter the terrain

Your guy and the princess cannot pass large terrain gaps and deep water.

Now i reaaly need to get to bed, but i couldn't resist to take a quick look at the other entries and i saw some really interesting things there.

Sleep well and relax, it's over :)

Stalk - OMG it's a game!

Posted by richard on 2010/04/03 23:58

Well will you look at that, I managed to get some game into my fancy tech demo. Try it!

endless-path-6.zip

I went out last night and saw the quite excellent Micmacs à tire-larigot and had way too much dinner afterwards and retired about midnight.

And woke at 4AM with my brain telling me it'd finally figured out how to make a game of the tech demo I'd been working on all week. I told it to shut the hell up and rolled over. And again.

At 6:30AM I got up and started working on the game again. About an hour later I realised that daylight savings had ended and it was actually 5:30AM. The deadline for me is 10AM. Plenty of time to write a game, right?

Well I managed to get something out of the mess. I hope you like it :-)

ps. link updated with new file which fixes some stupid bugs

The Teetering Towers of San Gimignano - Teetering Towers - final

Posted by Cosmologicon on 2010/04/03 23:52

I'm worried that people who haven't studied harmonic oscillators in physics class will have trouble getting the hang of my mechanic, so in addition to "cheat mode", I included a video walkthrough of the tutorial level (thanks to An_Ony_Moose for help encoding it!). If you can't get past the tutorial, check out the video!

The Teetering Towers of San Gimignano

This version doesn't include my original blender files and the OBJs, to cut down on space. I also uploaded a "dev" version, so if you want those too for some reason, check out my entry page!

The goal is guide the clouds to the exit.

Ninja Tower - Ninja Tower 1.0 released

Posted by cyhawk on 2010/04/03 23:25

We're done:

Make sure you have someone to play against! It's not a lot of fun with only one player and I had no time to write an AI (it would have taken a week on its own I guess).

We finished the sounds today and I think they complete the personality of the game very nicely. I'm the voice of the left ninja and my wife, Beata has voiced the ninja on the right. I have also framed the game with instructions (like in the image above) and gameover screens today, so it will hopefully give the impression of a proper game to casual observers. The game starts up with a randomly chosen song (of a set of 3), so do not be alarmed if you hear very off-key whistling — a simple restart will probably fix it.

Although our towers do not sway I hope they can still be called wibbly-wobbly. They look really unstable when cut the right way!

I resisted playing your games until now, but I am looking forward to indulging myself next week! Have a nice Easter!

Soul Shenanigans - So here we are at the last 40 minutes

Posted by ikanreed on 2010/04/03 23:21

We've got all our levels beatable and more or less complete with enemies and finished(ish) layout.  We've got to hide our powerups in the levels soon.  Things are looking dangerous before our time runs out.

Game is stable, most content ready.  Hopefully it won't be too bad.

Things From Above - Done, at last (source only, because I don't get how distutils is supposed to work - halp?)

Posted by macrobe on 2010/04/03 22:37

We made it. It's done. Go grab it while it is still hot!

This is a source only release, I'm afraid.

I couldn't get distutils to work for some reasons. It wouldn't add the image files to the package.

Can anyone tell me how you are supposed to configure your setup script to add additional files?
(not that it would help me for this challenge anymore, but it would be interesting to know)

The Daft Spaniels - Stick a fork it in... It's done! Wibbly Wobbly Bridge 1.0

Posted by daftspaniel on 2010/04/03 22:26

Wahoo! All over for 'the game'. Loved doing the challenge and will do it again :-) BTW I am here because of the little bit of Python Podcast inspired me into it!!!!

Here's the + and -'s from the experience - personal and technical.

Positives:
  • I have produced a reasonably complete game with 40 levels.
  • It was managed without late nights or sacrificing much family life.
  • It's a reasonably unusual idea for a game.
  • Great support from community.
  • I may finish the game off sometime.
  • Great fun to take part.
Negatives
  • Graphics are truly awful!
  • Only limited sound and no music.
  • No game completion screen.
  • Missing game elements - bonus treasures and health boosts.
  • No windows installer (I'd like to have done this but too much like the day job!)
  • Did I mention the Graphics are truly awful!
  • The code is such a hack.
Looking forward to some feedback from the crowd. No award winner but hope you have some fun playing with it.
