April 2009 challenge: “Get off my lawn”

Cat vs Mice - Day 6 Progress (Cat vs Mice)

Posted by mespringfield on 2009/05/02 02:21

Well, since the last update I managed to get collision detection working and implemented a waypoint system for the mice to find their way to the garden shed. Now I'm getting ready for the final push to get this game in a playable state before the deadline. I think I'll be pulling an all-nighter to get it done. Here is what's left on my list to accomplish:
  • Implement cat detection & avoidance for the mice. It'll be something simple like: if cat is near then go the opposite direction until cat is out of range, then proceed to the next waypoint.

  • Finish up some of the graphics. I still need to put roofs on the houses and flowers in the flower boxes. If I have some time to spare I may work on some finishing touches for other game objects.

  • Implement the main menu, game difficulty selection screen, instruction screen(s), level completed screen, game over screen...

  • Create the final levels for the game. I've been working with a test level for most of the week. Once the game is playable, it shouldn't take too long for me to make a few levels.

  • Final documentation (readme file) and game packaging.
Well, this is it. Good luck everyone! I look forward to playing your games over the next few days.

Aliens on My Lawn - Friday Progress

Things have been so busy, I've been unable to get around to posting updates! The game engine is 100% running. I've got some nice menu music providing a beat, and everything seems more-or-less bugless. However, almost no artwork exists yet. Always leaving the hardest for last.

As Yet Untitled Game In Which Cranky Old Man Hits Kids With Cane - Whoa, we've got a game

Posted by prag.Modul on 2009/05/02 01:20

Not much to say yet, still in desperate need of some mapping, but the game is coalescing. Despite the (temporary) title, it is exactly as much of an RPG as Zelda 1 was. Enjoy the screenshots, good luck everyone, see you when it's all over.

Chess vs Zombies! - Night of day 6 - Still no gameplay

Posted by Tee on 2009/05/02 01:13

I'm feeling a bit lost.

I've managed to finish the art except for the animations. I'm trying to skip the animations and add gameplay, but it's much more complicated that it sounds. Not to mention the animations are kind of vital to my game. Unfortunately, you might not see gameplay from me this time. I'm wondering if I really should submit it anyway. It might be a waste of time for the judges, but I think I will submit it only so I can judge other games.

I'm tired, yet there is still an endless amount of stuff to do. This Pyweek is killing me. Next time, I need to remember to go easy on the idea.

Only 23 more hours to go.

SwordOfAwesome - Not really Final

Posted by LordFartinbras on 2009/05/02 00:34

In a frantic rush to do what I can, I've submitted what might be final. I'm headed out of town for a memorial service and don't know if I'll have internet access between now and then so this way at least I'll have something even if it's not all packaged as well as it should be.

The controls are the same as listed in the previous post. There is no real winning or losing, just the fun of lost of bullets!

Lawn of the Dead - Day 6 - Nearly Done :D

Posted by Zahmekoses on 2009/05/02 00:05

So... Day 6 is over, Day 7 began and we are on track... probably.

Most of our game is already done (Well, basic gameplay was established after the first day ;)) and we are quite happy with this as I had to go to work and Serval had to go to university during the week.
So this was the first time where both of us only had less than a half day per workday to work on this game. - And still I think we got quite a nice thing together here.

Instead of explaining all the stuff surrounding the game I will just briefly announce that this game is a "classical" Zombie-Survival-Game with simple graphics and a bit complexity (to increase replayability).
For more information, please refer to our (just completed) in-game help screen below: :)

So, we are on track and apart from implementing the Soundfiles, creating some Music and implementing a "special" (read: "hidden") game-mode, everything is done [maybe some polishing here and there] - One day left and it looks like we might finish... this time :)

Lawn - last day and not nearly done

Posted by allefant on 2009/05/01 23:57

Hm, well, it's the last day already. I learned quite some new things in Blender - more specificly, a bit about old style low poly modeling. You wouldn't believe how long it took me to carve this elf out of a box (well, extrude several boxes and switch on subsurf). And then to have it flutter its wings...

And then one elf fits into a 30x20 pixel box inside the game including wings, so all you see is a fluttering pixel block. Guess I'm really good at partitioning my available time to the important things :P

Well, I miss half of the artwork and half of the gameplay still. Will have to frantically try to get the gameplay working in the next hours...

BubbMan 2 - Night of Day 6

Posted by pymike on 2009/05/01 23:51

Hurrah! I got the ending cutscene + credits + boss in! All that's left to do is 4 more levels, the energy bar, tutorial, and perhaps an opening cutscene.

No screenie, have to leave soon for my bro's b-ball game, so I'll see you all later.

The Unfortunate Undoing - Day 6 - One day more

Posted by ZeroByte on 2009/05/01 23:18

Cause it's fitting and cause my working soundtrack for pyweek has been Les Miserable, go watch One Day More. Lea Salonga!

Mostly spent today doing the final graphics. Nothing much to show though. gord has been building all the levels. Looks like I might not be touching code at all this pyweek... which is might be a good thing depending on your opinion of my code. Anyhoo, its the last day of pyweek, chase that deadline kiddo!

Rose Ninja - Day Six -- It's starting to look like a game!

Posted by Akake on 2009/05/01 22:47

I'm considering getting some sleep. I want to get a fresh start tomorrow.

Man, two days of work and it's already starting to look like a game. This is amazing.

I've got a level and a half, level progression, enemies, and gobs of ninja awesomeness!

I'm liking some of the other entries, as well. I can't wait to play all of them!

The last couple of days have really been amazing. I mean, a game in three days? With levels?! And NINJAS?!?! WOOOO!!! BONZAI!!

Phew! And I'm tired. But I made it... This far. ;-)
