September 2008 challenge: “The length of a piece of string”

Aleutha and the strings of life - Aleutha - The strings of destiny

Posted by Trobadour on 2008/09/09 22:57

A shadow lies over the once beautifull lands of Harmonica. Evil reigns with a merciless fist and Aleutha, the magical harp, that guaranteed centuries of peace, lies shattered in the dust.

You managed to escape before the dark lord has taken over the king's castle but you had to leave Princess Giselle, the love of your life, behind. Your only hope, to rescued the princess and the land of Harmonica, is to repair Aleutha and banish the dark lord forever.

After months of struggle and exhaustion you discover the remains of Aleutha in a deep cavern. Many strings are lacking, but a little spark of magic is left. With the help of an old druid living nearby, you repair Aleutha and also find out, where the missing strings are located.

With the help of Aleutha you travel the land, banishing the servants of the dark lord, and search for the remaining strings, to restore Aleutha's full magical power and to finally face the dark lord.

To explain the game principle in a few words: 2D-ShootEmUp-GuitarHero-BeatEmUp.

You try to play melodies, to create power waves that banish enemies. There are different melodies you can play and combine to combo's that unleash an extra bonus like a short time stop, invullnerability and so on. But in contrast to Guitar Hero you are free in the choice of what notes you play. More like in a BeatEmUp-Game where you have the choice of punshing your opponent or kick or block...

Aleutha and the strings of life - Finally i got an idea

Posted by Trobadour on 2008/09/09 22:31

It is a little bit bizarre but i voted for the winning theme. And on sunday i thought my existing idea through and realized, that this wasn't the thing i want to spent a whole week on.

It was a little puzzle game where a ball falls through a maze of poles. You have a limited string that you can cut into pieces and use the pieces to connect two poles, so that the way down is blocked and the falling ball is redirected. The ball had to fall into a specific place and there are obstacles and so on.

The idea is not bad, but there is no challenge for me to do something new. The last pyweek i had a lack of sound, so this time i will introduce sound along with strings as a central concept of my game.

Because i already lost nearly 3 days and also don't know, if i have that much time the following 3 days, it may be, that i blow the deadline. But let's see what i can accomplish and i am also willing to finish the game, even if it's not for this pyweek because the game idea set's me on fire.

So stay tuned and excited for ... Aleutha - The strings of destiny

Bungee Manager - Tuesday flies away...

Posted by Woodwolf on 2008/09/09 22:28

My "clients" are already satisfyingly enjoying bungee jumping. They arrive to the bridge and they walk around waiting to be chosen for the next jump. With a simple clicking mechanic the player choses the length of the rope and the jumping precision (so jumpers don't swing dangerously). When the jump finishes, they are lifted smoothly and happily walk away.

That's because it's still completely safe to hit another jumper or the ground below: collisions are not implemented yet. That and some "special effects" will be added tomorrow, along with economical rewards if I have enough time! Good bye, day 3!

ArmchairArmada PyWeek 7 - PyODE Problems!!!

Posted by ArmchairArmada on 2008/09/09 22:10

Unbeknownst to me, PyODe has a bug that throws a major monkey wrench in my plans! Using a TriMesh causes a segmentation fault when you try to call space.collide in Ubuntu! I was planning on using a trimesh for the world geometry my characters and objects would move around in, but I might have to change my plans. The only solution I could think of is to maybe use a collection of other collision primitives ... but this doesn't sound very appealing to me.

You can read more about the bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pyode/+bug/258131

as yet unnamed - Progress

Posted by devguy on 2008/09/09 21:53

Making good progress. Been hopping around the various aspects - graphics, script, code depending on mood. Still need to do music, and battles. Might not have time to do anything fancy, let's hope I don't have to fall back to rockpaperscissors. For the battle system, I mean.

Legends of Kiralia: Shadows Dawn - Day 3 - First Entry

Posted by Zahmekoses on 2008/09/09 21:32

Dear Diary,

Sadly we did not spend much time with you until now.
I just uploaded our ritualistic fake screen shot [2 days late, but still... we adhere to well established rituals). As you might have already seen from the (fake-)screenshot, we were crazy enough to try a RPG... No fear, string is included and does indeed play a main role in our upcoming (and not finishable) Role-Playing-Game.

So this time, our - also ritualistic famous "last sentence" - probably will hold true:
We won't finish ;)

Gondola - I love how we work

Posted by joey101 on 2008/09/09 21:18

This is the first game that I haven't had to program the guts of. I get to happily design (and code) the UI and make pretty art work.

As on now (and it will probably stay like this) here is our main menu:

Plectrum Infinitum - Working Prototype

Posted by ajhager on 2008/09/09 16:32

In the last entry I basically just had an idea and a mockup. Now I have a fully working virtual chromatic autoharp with 36 dynamic strings and 15 chord bars. At this point its really a lot of fun as it is. I can't want until the next phase gets underway.

- The golden Yo-Yo

Posted by PyScripter on 2008/09/09 15:56

Hi all! I thought it was time I added a diary entry. I'm creating a platformer about a Yo-Yo pro. He's trying to find the "Golden Yo-Yo" wich he wants to use in a contest. He can use his Yo-Yo as a rope to swing over spikes, and as a weapeon.
