April 2009 challenge: “Get off my lawn”
Lawn of the Dead - Day 1 - Sloths on Mars
Posted by ServalKatze on 2009/04/26 23:00
Our first idea for the theme was rather boring but luckily we had a different idea after the theme was announced. ;)
Since both of us will be busy during the week we were extra-productive today and got the game foundation done. Zahme has finished all of the necessary graphics and will spend the rest of the week on eyecandy (and images for new features). Meanwhile I've implemented the gameplay basics with placeholder graphics.
Behold our marvellous non-fake screenshot! Sloths! Everywhere!!

We had planned to use PYGGEL to do a 3d game, but owing to our lack of 3d artists we had to ditch that.
Then we were going to use retrogamelib, but we couldn't figure how to make the idea work really well, or make the gfx look nice for the idea we had.
Now, we are settled on a RTS that uses neither PYGGEL or retro.
We aren't going to be sharing any more of our idea, beyond that it is an pseudo RTS/TD merging that appears to be kinda unique, at the moment...
So, we just started working on this idea about 4 hours ago (judging from the SVN logs) - but we already have the menu and the game window.
Another interesting thing is I have found the joys of using GoogleCode's ticket system.
Condensing our entire game into 15 or so tickets make it seem so much simpler and more organized. Also, it definitely helps with team organizing, so I can't believe we didn't make use if it sooner O.o
All in all, I am feeling very hopeful for this week now, after a lot of bumps and potential bumps are by :)

Blatently Unoriginal Entertainment - Procedurally Generated Map Plan
Posted by ArmchairArmada on 2009/04/26 20:45
I quickly wrote up an article on my blog about how I am going to try to procedurally generate maps in my game. It's just a basic run-down that doesn't fully explain everything everything, but it does show enough about how interesting maps can be made.
Now I need to figure out how I am going to use this along with the theme. I also needs to actually start coding, as I already wasted quite a bit of time.

It will be a fairly fast-paced game, with all sorts of acrobatics, wall-kicks, backflips, and the like. The levels will consist of massive machines that the pirates have built to steal crops.
The levels will be semi-timed. If the player can destroy the machine before it takes in all of the crops on the field it is on, they will recieve a bonus based on how much was left. Otherwise, they can still complete the level, but will recieve a penalty because all of the crops were picked, and have to be consumed or preserved before they rot.
The player will be granted a number of different weapons, including:
- Lasers, both pistol, rifle and cannon
- Plasma Weapons, again, pistol, rifle, and cannon
- Missile launchers
- Machine guns
- Maybe even a flamethrower
- And more!
The player will also have a jetpack, with which they can fly around. This will have limited power, and when it runs out, the player will have to wait for it to recharge.
It will have a skeletal animation system, which I have about a third of the way done.
This game is gonna be real cool! OwO
BubbMan 2 - Woo, I'm gold!

I'm going for Adventure Island-type gameplay, but much more exciting and fast-paced. I've been animating for the past 20 minutes, and I already have the hero (retrogamelib mascot Bubbman) running like all get out!

I'm still fiddling with the story, but basically you somehow are in the middle of nowhere, and an old tinkerer sends all types of robots and machines after you while screaming "Get off my lawn!" (Don't worry, the story will develop along the way). Levels will be timed and extremely hectic. In addition to wall-jumping, you'll be able to throw rocks at gophers, robots, etc. I also plan to incorporate all kinds of moving platforms, since I've never really had them before.
I'm pumped to go. Good luck to everyone!
