April 2007 challenge: “The only way is up”

Team Quicksilver - Day 6

Posted by RB[0] on 2007/04/06 23:55

Well, game play is nearly finished :)

You can now select different types of plants to grow,
zap the enemy, and he zaps you too...
Removed encase button/cursor, and removed idea from game,
Narianim made some more wonderful plants, and some new wizards, you can actually tell who you are ;), I have yet to implement them though...
Fixed the renderer so that draws sprite in the proper order, that took some thought, but now works great :D

TODO: make menus
make in-between level graphics
make sfx/music(my offer still stand sfor sfx/music ppl, as I have no experience whatsoever in music, and little in sfx)
Add locusts
make levels advance, instead of quit :/
Make game keep track of last finished level
implement new graphics
add new tiles
and fix any errors that crop up!

If we finish that with time to spare, we'll work on packaging, art, levels, whatever

Mount Fuji - pixel graphics - serious business!

While chrysn and nex are hacking away on the game logic, I'm busy redoing our graphics.

Yay for pixel ninjas... but which one to use?

Gizmo - My first final submission..

Posted by gizmo_thunder on 2007/04/06 22:37

I have almost completed my game. It's playable and has every thing that a game needs (menus, different levels, camera effects, sounds). Planning to add more misc stuff. Till then this would be it :) Here are the current screens:

Welcome to World Corporation - All messed up...

Posted by Tee on 2007/04/06 21:07

Well, I have the interface done (kinda - still a few issues to tackle), but I can't get the gameplay right, and at this rate I'm definitely not confident I'm going to finish the gameplay in time.

At this point I guess I should reveal what my game is. I was waiting until I had a prototype ready, but by now it's just too late.

The name of the game is 'Welcome to WC' (WC stands for World Corporation). You start off as a lowly trainee and it's your job to take over the company. Working isn't enough, so you get to spy for others' secrets and blackmail them, sabotage people so they get fired, and other stuff like that. You even get to meet a janitor (named 'The Janitor') who trades secrets with you. Your goal is to make people like you (or pretend to like you, depending on your means) so you get promoted to the top. Or at least that was the original plan.

In paper, this idea sounded good, but my execution was horrible. But at least I learned a lot.

Still, what do you think, should I submit the game even without the gameplay? Most people would probably disclassify me, but maybe I get some score for pity. :P Should I add an "unfinished" to the filename if I do so?

By the way, there are so many awesome entries this time. I wouldn't get a good score even if I had a perfect execution.

Team Zankar II - The Revenge - Crunch time

Posted by atiaxi on 2007/04/06 20:56

At work today I made a prioritized list of things I need to do. I'm listing it here for reference:

  1. Keyboard buttons activate on-screen buttons, rather than just the mouse
  2. Random dungeon generation
  3. Non-monster sprites
  4. Stairs up
  5. Activity log (i.e. hits, misses, etc)
  6. Spawning monsters
  7. More variety of items
  8. PC can drop inventory items
  9. PC can pick things up
  10. More than 10 items in inventory should be accessible
  11. Filling rooms with random treasure
  12. Monsters drop loot
  13. Game over screen
  14. Save game
  15. Load Game
  16. Character Creation Screen
  17. -----

  18. Character viewing screen
  19. Skill Cooldown, consumable items
  20. Character skills
  21. Choices of skills to gain on level up
  22. Better-looking dungeons
  23. Combat animations/effects
  24. Other classes

Everything above the line are things I consider critical to even play the game. I've already worked on some of them, but none are complete. I've got two options at this point: Give up in the face of overwhelming adversity, or

GO FOR IT!

You can probably guess which one I'm trying :)

Super Spelunker - Out of time :(

Posted by mangobrain on 2007/04/06 20:13

Well, I have to go off to the other end of the country tomorrow, and it's not likely I'll get near a computer to apply any further spit and polish to my entry, so I've uploaded it as-is. 'Tis a shame, as this is sooo close to being finished; one day to implement the final boss and add finishing touches would really be wonderful. *Sigh*

Bus Factor == 1 - Almost a game

Posted by Marlow on 2007/04/06 19:53

I finally got a couple of straight, uninterrupted hours where I could pull a few ideas together and ended up with:
  • a level made up of several rooms
  • a room with stairs in
  • doors between rooms
  • progressively larger levels
  • oh, and a bug in my robots' movement which my wife caught
Now it is time to pull a late night and turn it into a real game!
