February 2016 challenge: “The aftermath”

01000101 - Well here it ends

Posted by hidas on 2016/03/06 03:43

Ricky looked around his home, concerned. The game he had just booted up seemed...incomplete. He wasn't even sure how to play. No cool splash-screen adorned the title menu. No tutorial taught him the controls. In fact, the game seemed to have no purpose whatsoever. Then Ricky, gazing upon the luscious goodness of lemon cake, reached a starting conclusion: Perhaps this wasn't even a game at all. Perhaps, as they say in the Congo, "The metagame is your life", the purpose of the game was to discover, to understand, the game itself. (The Game. You just lost.) Perhaps, (and Ricky could hardly believe his own thoughts) the game recently uploaded to Pyweek by two quite dashing panadas was to discover the purpose, structure, and intent of their "creation". How could anyone be so arrogant, so pretentious, as to upload a metagame to Pyweek, Ricky wondered. Oh well. Time to show those two fool panadas what a true lemon cake maestro had up his sleeves. The Long Walk - Final Day After Thoughts

Posted by PixelFlower on 2016/03/06 01:31

Incidentally I know there is a bug where sometimes the game doesn't register the choice made during challenges for some reason, if you press enter again it goes through as normal. Also there is an occasional bug where a second cursor appears..? Again, just hit enter again on the option you want and it will work fine. I'm not sure what causes these issues but I could not figure out any way to reliably reproduce them so they just ended up staying in. I believe there is also an issue where if you jam on the directional key over and over like mad you can bug out the cursor handler and make the cursor just fly off the screen... Just don't do that and you should be fine. OH and when you restart the game it says you have Structure less than 100 but technically in the game files it is at 100 I believe, that's just a weird glitch with how it is animating that variable. It wasn't a big deal so I didn't prioritize fixing that. I think that's all of the bugs I can recall but I'm sure people will find more.

koperkapel - Actual gameplay, but more tech demo than game

Posted by drnlm on 2016/03/06 01:17

Day 1 screenshot

We didn't manage to get enough done during the week to actually make a game, so this isn't a complete entry. Thanks to a frantic push on Saturday and Sunday morning (which tripled the total commit count), we did manage to get a lot of the elements we discussed on the first Sunday more or less implemented, but we that left no time to work on making the game playable.

Despite this, we are pretty happy with the results, given the limited time we managed to find to work on the entry. The game looks quite good, and we feel that it at least demonstrates the potential of the original idea.

What we managed to include:

  • Vehicles: Roomba, Tank, Quadcopter (although it walks, rather than flies)
  • Weapons: Both melee weapons (butter knife, crowbar) and ranged weapons (roach spit, the gun)
  • Enemies: Rats, roaches and robots (although they're very similar under the hood)
  • Serums: Intelligence, Strength and Speed (although only intelligence actually does anything)
  • Doors and keypads
  • A tunnel system (with a lot of logic about connecting tunnels nicely that nobody will notice)
  • Roach recruiting
  • A complete roach management system (like many management systems, this one is fully featured, but not practically very useful)
  • Combat, including the ability to lose the game (winning is an overated goal)
  • A nice floating HUD for the player state
  • Sounds and animations
  • A very fancy world state

Things we didn't get to:

  • The credits
  • Level generation: We implemented bits of our planned random level generator, and even used some of the results, but it never got far enough along to be the hoped-for labour-saving device that would generate actual content.
  • Doing more interesting things with the tunnels.
  • Doing more with the serum abilities.
  • Better enemies. The current ones are very stupid and somewhat strange
  • Saving and restoring of game state.
  • A victory condition.

For this pyweek we used Daniel Pope's and Richard Jones' Pygame Zero. It was a lot of fun to use, and most of the issues we had were because we hadn't taken time to properly study it beforehand.

We may revisit this entry at some point and try flesh out more of our original vision, but that will only be after the judging ends.

Gangs of the Aftermath - Never enough time

Posted by iminurnamez on 2016/03/06 00:55

Not a lot of depth, but it's playable and I think I found all the major bugs. There's no end game, so if you run out of territories or take them all over you're left in limbo. There's a lot of stuff half-implemented (hint: not having food doesn't actually matter), but the core mechanics are done. Hopefully, there aren't more bugs lurking aboutst, let me know if there are issues with running it. Also note that it takes about 20 -30 seconds to generate the city, just be patient, it'll load.

Soaked - Time Up

Posted by etmaifo on 2016/03/06 00:07

This was a terrible one for me. I only had one day to do this; code and graphics. I learned how to make pixel art ;) But the game is not playable at all. No objectives, no enemy AI, no bullets. I didn't want to give up though. I had to know how far I can go with only 24 hours left to complete a whole game in pygame. But it was a fine concept what I had. At least I think so. I'll polish and upload just like I did with my previous entry. Can't wait to play all the games!

Breakout clone - Uploaded!!

Posted by marienbad on 2016/03/05 23:29

Well I did it, entered my game. The music is terrible, but the 303 is broken, so it can't be helped. Will get a USB/Midi cable in the near future to see if it works via Midi and I can then use the 808 and 909 drums as well as the 303 sounds. It is a slow game, the gameplay is pretty easy and probably a tad boring in places, but I got it all done, the game, the levels, the high score table, the title screen, the music, everything. I even downloaded some nice free graphics and cut them out with the GIMP! Hopefully things will improve from here.

The Little Drop - Typical final day problems

Posted by fireclaw on 2016/03/05 22:57

so, the last day is almost over. I gave it my best shot to get anything fixed and working as good as possible, though somehow it didn't work out as expected, I can't provide working installers for all platforms. Actually, I could only provide tested and working installers for Linux systems, but that won't satisfy my need for completion. Hence I stay with the already uploaded p3d file and as it turned out that might not work on windows because of some mysterious errors I never had before with those kind of files (well, I already imagined windows will make problems, as it always makes problems... can't expect things to instantly work on windows, can you?), I added a packed version of the source code, which was tested and proven to work on windows and instructions for how to run it just in case the p3d file doesn't work. Also make sure to follow the steps and information given in the readme files and in the projects entry description, then everything should run and be as simple as a one click installer, after all it's always just one installation and running a file no matter which way you take. Anyway, if you encounter any errors or if it won't work for you for some reason that I don't know yet, just let me know and I'll try to get it fixed.

Now, all that's left to say is, have fun with the game.

P.S. If I get installers and or the p3d file to correctly work on my windows test systems, I will also make this game available from our website Grimfang-studio.org where you can check for updates if we continue our work on this game after PyWeek has officially ended. Though, that might depend on how many of you like to see it getting improved and grow from it's current state.

Gas and Grass - That's it!

Posted by wezu on 2016/03/05 21:45

Well, there are still an hour or so left, but my eyes hurt too much. I started today around 7:30 and now it's 22:45. The 'game' is as it is, I'd need one more day to get the gameplay existent, but I don't have that day. There's one more commit, that somehow refuses to be pushed to Github but I don't have the strength to fight with it. I'll upload the files tomorrow morning.

A game by Gato - Could not work on the game...

Posted by Gato on 2016/03/05 21:26

Unfortunately this time I could not work on the game. I was too busy the whole week with with unexpected events that I couldn't work on it. It's a shame, maybe next time =/
