April 2011 challenge: “Nine Times”
PyWeekMan vs. Dr. PyEvil - ... and all i get is this crapy techdemo
Posted by Trobadour on 2011/04/10 00:07
My original plan was to let the player fight as PyWeekMan against his arch enemy Dr. PyEvil in citys all over the world. PyWeekMan would face his enemy along with an army of henchman blasting energy shots across the screen. On the bottom would be destroyable Skyscrapers going down during the battle.
The only thing that i could implement are the destroyable buildings. Play the techdemo, have fun and maybe you can imagine how awesome the final game could have been.

The Inferno - Couldn't finish...
Posted by Ryan42 on 2011/04/10 00:00
In fact, barely even started. Not only did I not have enough time, with school: an essay, music solo coming up, and my partner and I not getting together as much I hoped, the gamed turned into a few lines of not working, and quite disappointed with myself, but I also realized I still need a better plan for making these games. I get so caught up in the graphics, nothing gets done. Maybe next time, when I'm maybe a little bit more experienced as well, I'll not only have time to do it, but maybe even finish it.
ELG Team - Oh, crap, we're quitting
Posted by gnola14 on 2011/04/09 23:39
That's it, we're quitting. There's no chance we'll be able to finish this in time.
It's a shame, 'cause we had a good idea but not enough time (we didn't take the full week to code it). We'll keep working on it though, because we liked it enough to give it a try.

Lemming - End of Day 7

Well here I am. 32 minutes to go and I am submitted. That was a gruelling but satisfying experience.
I tried to make as many levels as possible and ironically ended up with 9.
2021 lines of python.
Tyler's having fun with the level editor - I think we may continue to work on this past the competition.
Also I'm going to contribute to Tiled. Having relied on it heavily, I know how to make it better.
I also discovered a few pyglet bugs. I'll submit patches to fix them.

CrossFire - Blimey. Done.

Wow. I just finished the tweaking that has gone on all evening and I have uploaded my final version.
This week has been a huge amount of fun, and I really hope that you all enjoy my little game.
The idea is to defeat 9 waves of increasingly irate and difficult to kill aliens. The twist is that you control two ships at once.
Use the z and x keys to fire, and the cursor keys to move the ships.
I haven't created any binary executables, sorry, as I ran out of time. I have used the Skellington 2.3 structure though so just run_game.py and away you go.
I have learned a lot about Python this week, and have really fallen in love with the language. I discovered better ways to do a lot of things and as such my code is patchy with regards to quality and Pythonic-ness :-)
I think that's it. Right... I'll leave you all to it, and I'll look forward to taking a look at what everyone else has come up with.
Cheers,
Dave.

Sorry folks. We are giving up.
We still plan on finishing this game. But it is not going to happen tonight.
We had fun. We learned a lot. But we didn't make it this time.
For anyone who is interested:

Tic-Tac-Toe Squared - Nerdfighter Math: Day 8 FINAL Update
Posted by Math on 2011/04/09 23:28
DAY 8
4:40 PM - I've been working on school stuff all day. Next week, I have a Java test, a paper due, an English group project to be prepared for, a pair programming/linear algebra assignment due, and a couple weeks from now, I have finals. But as it is, the deadline for PyWeek is in 3-4 hours so I need to finish up what I need to finish up. Things I intend to finish: hard mode, extra voice clips, add sound clip for moving, and reupdate voice to face dictionary.
6:30 - 90 minutes to go. I've recorded and edited the final voice clips, updated the face dictionary, finalized hard mode (or at least as hard as I can think to make it). We're almost done here
7:00 - 1 hour left and I'm pretty much done coding. I just need to make an .exe version and upload them together with the source code. Unfortunately, I could NOT FIGURE OUT how to make OGG work, so I had to use WAV files, which are so incredibly uncompressed that the audio takes up 97% of the memory of the game, which is about 30 MB. The game itself is less than 1 MB.
7:25 - Okay, I'm done, both the source and the executable versions of the game are uploaded, so...yeah, I'm done. I'm still a bit mad that the files are so fricking big because of the sound files, but I can't do anything about that now.
So Tic-Tac-Toe Squared is done. I hope you enjoy it.

Ok, got our final submission in now. I may or may not try to make some last minute tweaks before the competition ends, but at least it is a playable game with a solid mechanic. Enjoy! =)
