To GUI or not to GUI?
Do games need to have a GUI? I've read the rules and they don't specify the type of interface. I've always loved text based games and I could certainly manage to write an entertaining text game with minimal graphics in a week!Or is this considered cheating the spirit of pyweek?

I agree with mauve. Just be aware that when it comes time for rating games, the box specifically tells people to rate "Production" based on graphics and sound. I recommend clearly reminding judges in your entry description that even though there's no graphics and sound, a text adventure game involves a lot of production value, and they should rate based on that.
It's certainly not cheating, there have been a few pure-python text-based entries before.

That's great, very helpful! I'm fairly new to programming so pyweek will be a big challenge for me, without diving into the magical world of GUI!
I'll just have to be sure to write a good story and have solid code.

A text adventure with sfx and music would be a cool thing.

Nope, go for it. Don't write boring functional prose though - I for one will mark your production scores on how well you paint a picture with language.
