Plan B...
I... don't have a Plan B yet.I have lots of ideas, but I can't make a game out of any of them. D:
Worse, almost none of them fit the theme...
I'm kind of worried about whether I can finish...
Ah well, it's my first compo. I can't reasonably expect a resounding success my first time out, right?
I still wish I could think of an idea I could actually make a game out of, though. ._.
I'm sure I'll think of something, but I know the theme will be trouble for me...
*Sigh* All I have are fragments of concepts and dead-end ideas right now.
I have to stay positive, though. I... just wish I could find a good idea...
C'est la vie, and all that, I suppose. :/
----====----
Bleh, I'm not going to get anywhere feeling sad about my lack of ideas.
Question for my more experienced fellow entrants:How important is the theme?
I have a handful of ideas that could be fun, but none even involve string, much less the length of a piece of it. If the theme isn't, like, super-critical, I'll have some ideas to use.
That's been my main stumbling block so far. I have next to no complete concepts involving string. :P
So, again:Would maybe just touching on the theme a bit, rather than tightly integrating it, get me disqualified, or would I be OK?
It's kinda bumming me out seeing almost all of the topics on the messages page saying things like "Idea chosen!" "Progress made!" "I have this great idea...", when I don't have a clue :P
All I can think of with string is tieing things up, and I can't get a complete idea out of that...

Maybe Plan B is to revive plan A, but reinvent the idea? Platformer in string-village sounds like a win to me. And friba was a cool looking sprite.
Don't get too discouraged. In the last pyweek, I stumbled over tech and tried to force a long-term game idea I had into the theme and it was a disaster. And I had been doing competitions for a while. Don't get too hung up on the theme, just make what feels right.
I would say the theme is important to the competition, but personally I wouldn't DQ someone for going off track. If your game covers the theme to some extent, in my opinion it's fine. The idea I currently have doesn't integrate the theme too tightly - it's very visible, but it doesn't focus completely on it (though this idea I have so far is very volatile, so that might change).
Probably one of the most important thing I can say, though, is work with an idea you think you can finish in a week. I seem to never do that due to excitement and I always end up with a rushed game. :P
I think that's a good idea. The problem I've been having is that I kept redesigning the darned thing. I couldn't stay with one concept for it. :P
I think Plan B should probably be to reinvent Plan A. It was a good idea, I just didn't think it through properly.
And besides that, I'm pretty sure it'll be the only idea I'll come up with that'll match the theme! XD
Thanks for the encouragement. ^_^
I really needed that. :)
I mainly have the problem of thinking of a fragment of a game, and that fragment will generally sound kind of fun, but I can't make a real game out of it, or about 85% of my other ideas. XD

Sometimes ideas can be inspired by taking an indirect approach. I suggest using google like a magic eight ball. Do some searches for "string ___" where ___ is just some random word. Try synonyms like "rope", "yarn", etc as well.
