It would also be nice to make a million dollars in a week but neither idea seems really feasible. It might be better to do something you know can be done it time. Of course if you pull this off it would be really cool.

Well minimal mmo games have been written fast... And i have good setting no real map - just black space. Starships made of energy – meaning what ever you want. One basic resource energy – that comes form stars. Simple server and chat – basic MUD stuff. And some basic RTS move units around and build stuff. You right major concern is time…

Online RTS, yes. I'm pretty sure a basic Starcraft clone is possible - but a persistent-world RTS, doubtful. That said, don't let me discourage you. :)

Well a minimal RTS would require for me to make an AI of some sort. That is too difficult to make good in this short time. It would be much easer to make a death mach RTS where people connect to other people to play. Well if I have an ORTS why not just make life cooler with just a few more lines of code make MORTS which is has a server keeping persistent game state. This will give me a chance to make a true MMORTS – MMO have much bigger player value because of other people. A crappy MMO game will be played much more then a crappy non MMO game.
