The First Bunny

On day 1 I created a system where strings of a 4-letter alphabet (the genotype) would describe organisms made of ellipses (the phenotype). I spent day 2 splicing genes and weeding out degenerate bunnies until I can now finally present you Adam, the origin of this species!

I see no reason why you would want to check out its complete DNA sequence other than interest in the strange. As an artificial species I imagine its genome is quite fragile now. I'll have to carefully mutate and breed it tomorrow so that it becomes hardier.

After that I'll have to come up with a way to turn this into a game. OR I'LL JUST PLAY WITH MY BUNNY!

I don't care if there is a game here or not :P
It's 11pm and I was working until now. I had a few spare minutes though and painted the "furry" texture.
 
Now I really don't care if there is a game or not. Looks so pretty! Can you do a furry version of the ugly mutant too?
I painted two more textures — "leaf" and "scales". These are triggered by the corresponding genes, so I went ahead and spliced "leaf" into Adam's ears and "scales" into his legs.

He doesn't seem to mind.

I'll see if I can trigger the mutations from yesterday and try to post a furry mutant in a sec!
Since each gene is just a string it may be that if you place "inflate" (makes a part bigger) and "rotate" (guess what this does) next to each other you get "inflaterotate" which unintentionally contains "later" (that's not a gene, but still). This happens more when the strings are made up of only four letters and most genes are expressed by more than one randomly generated sequence.

Yesterday's mutant appeared when I set the length of the "contract" (makes a part more elongated) gene quite short. This would cause it to randomly occur all around the genome just because it's a short string and the genome is long and varied. Where exactly it pops up and which parts it contracts is unpredictable. So this is not exactly the same mutant but it emerged the same way.
 
I've also got an eye texture in. Not sure about how the manga highlight gels with the fur...

I'd call that a feature, not a bug! This kind of thing happens in real-life genetics as well. There are apparently some genes in some organisms that code for one thing when you start at a certain position, and something else -- equally vital -- when you start in a slightly different position. Naturally-occurring LZW compression!
