Escaping from Wherever

Is it possible to actually escape from Wherever? I've reached what I assume is the final fight, with the demon-summoning mage or whatever he is, but I don't seem to be strong enough to beat him, even after killing every living thing in the castle for experience and putting on all my most powerful items.

Is gaining a level or getting killed the only way to restore health, or have I missed something?

Am I supposed to fight the final enemy directly, or is there a cleverer way?

I managed to beat him.  Get a fair amount of life-drain equipped and try to hit the boss as much as possible(you get his life and he doesn't hit back)

Oh, so that's what the life-drain thing is about! I hadn't noticed that effect. I'll try again with this in mind, thanks.
