PyWeek - Pastafobia - feedback

Very fun game, the gameplay had a lot of features that were neat, and the animations were very well done.

This was at first a hard game to get into. The first combat level was darkly colored and therefor unappealing, and it seemed I was a feeb who couldn't even beat the basic level. But I saw how much work must have gone into the game and wanted to see it. There was a Discord link on the team's web site and I dove into the belly of the beast to wrest its secrets from the oracles. The men were quite helpful, and my side adventure paid off. I went back into the game armed with knowledge, secrets (if I need them), and an appreciation of the game and the devs that can only be got by interaction.
Things I wish I'd known (things that should have been in readme and pyweek page):
- on the map little circles are story, big circles are battles
- get minimum gold and score to progress (the game's not on rails; pay attention to the map)
- use gold to unlock weapons in the store (building, upper right of map)
- boss fights didn't make it into the game, they're a story prop (but a very fun one)
Things I learned that helped win:
- in battle, move move move, empty mag to reload during lulls; go for soft targets, of course; heavily armored groups are very risky, go around them
- shaolin spinning double kick is unexpectedly formidable :D
- G.O.A.T. with bazooka is my fave, he is badass; watch out for bazooka G.O.A.T., you haughty tanks
There are bugs and a number of rough edges. But, you know, Pyweek. It comes with the territory.
Really, the tropes in the story and combat are what boost this game. The writer, blender artist, and level designer(s) obviously had a lot of fun. IMO the trophy goes to the ocean combat location: Surfer MAN with dual wielding G.O.A.T. on the bow of the surfboard versus orcas, aquatic soldiers buoyed by rainbow Lifesavers(tm), and combat rifle polar bears on their last piece of ice - uproariously funny. I was laughing so hard I almost couldn't play.
How to summarize... This action story of MAN and G.O.A.T. is some formidable competition, look out Pyweek. More polish in the GUI, explosions, etc. would have been very welcome. For some reason I don't yet understand, goats are funny. I went in Discord to get the cheats, but I'm glad I was able to beat the game w/o them. Maybe I can hang with MAN and G.O.A.T. after all!

Pretty random but I guess that's the idea! It seemed like there was some aspect of the mechanics I wasn't understanding. Was I supposed to be able to tell which enemies were evil twins? Or was there a boss? I just played until it seemed like the enemies stopped, and then I quit the level. Sometimes that advanced me and sometimes it didn't. The dialogue was a little cut off for me so maybe I missed something important.

I found the gameplay to quickly become repetitive, and didn't play through many levels. There are heaps of levels, but the weapons and powerups were exactly the same where I played up to. I also wasn't sure what completes a level - do you have to go to the end or just get enough gold to proceed?
Finally, I didn't think that the matching to the theme was very strong.

Cool! I really liked the graphics, they were super awesome: really cool concept with the man and his goat :) ... this should have been made for that pyweek where we almost voted in “goats goats goats!” as the theme! The sound of the magnum firing is extremely satisfying ... I had a few issues with the controls? The keys would keep sticking for me (both asdw and trigger on the mouse) which made the game a bit too hard to progress past the first couple of stages. Great work!

I had to remove all sound to be able to run it.
You can only access to the main menu if you are in a level, and go to map and main menu takes you to the map.
The game is fun, I didn't get the theme implementation.

The controls were buggy and delayed and not always working on my laptop (MacOS), but otherwise it would have been given "above average" for production. Was there a way you could have spiced up the storytelling in the intro? The goat theme was funny

This is so SCI FI. But what is this strange fixation of the goat animal? The game was not that fun for me because it was just shooting stuff. Also, I have encountered a gameplay bug. When I am controlling the car, after a while, the car starts moving on its own and does not respond to my input. Occasionally I will see a popup at the lower left corner that is telling me to choose à,á,â,ä,æ,a,ã,å or ā. I am on a mac. This is with python 3.8.8. When I use python 3.9, I get this:

TypeError: __init__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'style'
Coiuld not find a way to quit the game from the 'map'. Had to start a level and let me kill to find the quit button. Also I do not like that the game goes to full screen without warning.
Thanks for your time.
