Signing up

This is mostly a question for Richard, although feel free to jump in if you've got an opinion.

At the moment, you can only (ignoring the secret way) register for the site during certain time periods (a month before each contest, I think). What gives with that? Is there a reason behind it that I'm not aware of?

It seems really weird that people can't sign up, even though the announcement has been made for Pyweek 9. A few people have come by the IRC channel asking how to sign up. I'm sure others have just given up and forgotten about it. As well as that, first timers can't post here until after the library deadline, which seems to be one of the parts of Pyweek which is most confusing to newcomers.

Is there a compelling reason for things to be this way, or is it just a historical accident?

I ended up figuring out the secret/direct way because I thought a login with no register was simply a design bug... I didn't even know this was intended as I noticed teams had already started forming and registering.
There's two reasons I lock off rego outside a small period. The first is to avoid spam in the off-season. The second is because of the huge number of unused user registrations in the first PyWeek.

Those reasons do make sense - I've never spotted any spam on the Pyweek site, but that probably just means that you're efficient about catching it. Obviously you don't want to have to be so hawk-eyed all year round. And the unused user registrations are also significant, although there's probably a solution involving regularly culling unused accounts.

However, would it be possible to open registration a little bit earlier in future? In particular, I think it would be helpful if newbies could post before the library deadline. If nothing else, prominently displaying when registration for new users will open would allay a lot of confusion.

Yeah, I'll be looking at opening them up a few weeks earlier next time. I've not got any time to work on the website right at the moment :(
