Starting this off right (by being behind)!

So I've never made a game before that wasn't me dorking around for class back in college.. To top it off, I'm at a wedding this weekend! I'll definitely be getting a late start.

I haven't actually seen the Moon movie, but I did want to see it, so I'll probably put it on in the background when I get back to my apartment and dork around with github and the dev environment. My original time split was going to be a day of brainstorming, a day of packaging (hello, world! submission, a day of game design, a day of game development, a day of polish, and two days that could swing where-ever they are needed. Since I'm on the road, I'll probably flip the order a bit.

Render framework evolved, on to objects

So I had some fun brainstorming ideas with my brother late at night for what I'd want the game to do if I knew what I was doing. Of course I don't, so they won't be making it into the game. If I do this challenge again, I can try to pair with an animator and/or 2D artist and get some original content going.

In other news, I also got a chance to actually watch Moon, and it was pretty awesome! I gave a shout-out to Duncan Jones (director) on Twitter, and he replied back! Love it when people engage like that... https://twitter.com/kenners/status/374789440213774336

With less than 48 hours to go, I have a decent framework, and now I just have to fill out my 3 main game pieces:
  • Sky
  • Moon
  • Rover
Right now my rover is actually just a picture of Fry from Futurama. I spent some time tonight figuring out how to render video direct from the game (at a huge performance cost). See it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jh9Gx3rule4

The end goal will most likely be a rover graphic that flies over a pockmarked moon, with dynamic twinkling stars in the sky. Not much of a game in the end, but not bad for a first timer.

That's the way the cookie crumbles

I got to the point where I had a game concept and it looked achievable. That in itself was pretty awesome. But, I was still putting my full-time job ahead of this game, and unfortunately the job spiked a bit near the end of the week. So, I ended up with a render engine and that's about it. I bet there is a better way to do what I ended up doing using an existing framework, so I will have to do some more research on that before the next time.

Also, I might consider taking some time off.
